"Courts should be the impartial tool for doing justice between man and man. They should guarantee our liberties by telling us firmly and clearly where we stand, and so hold of us - including the government - to the bargain of social life." CHARLES FRIED, Former U.S. Solicitor General

Former Recorder's Court Judge Richard Cunningham is seeking an open seat (non-incumbent postion) on the Wayne County Circuit Court during the 2008 election cycle. His professional experience, demonstrated leadership and commitment to public service make him uniquely qualified for this important position.

Richard Cunningham, a Viet Nam combat veteran, worked his way through college as a laborer and UAW member at several auto-industry factories, and through law school as a benefits counselor with the Veterans Administration. Since his admission to the bar in 1979, he has served as an assistant prosecutor, a trial court judge, a trial attorney for the Attorney Grievance Commission, and an attorney in private practice. Well known in the legal community as a litigator, he has done more than 300 jury trials. He has shared the knowledge gained from such experience with young persons seeking careers in law enforcement by serving as an adjunct instructor at Henry Ford Community College.

Richard Cunningham currently serves as an elected member of the Board Of Commissioners of the State Bar of Michigan. He previously served two terms on the State Bar Representative Assembly. Other professional leadership positions include a term as President of the Criminal Law Section of the State Bar and three terms as Chairperson of Criminal Law Section of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association. He is a Trustee of the DMBA Foundation, and a Fellow of the State Bar Foundation.

Richard Cunningham is dedicated to the principle of "due process" for those accused of crimes, but has demonstrated his sensitivity and concern for crime victims. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Save Our Sons And Daughters (SOSAD) and on the National Board of Parents Of Murdered Children, Inc.

Richard Cunningham, a long-time resident of the City of Detroit, is firmly committed to "giving back to the community". He has been active in numerous community and civic organizations, and currently serves as Vice-Chair of U-SNAP-BAC Non-Profit Housing Corp. That community based organization has successfully developed blighted areas on the eastside. He is a Life Member of the NAACP, and holds a membership to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History. He has been active with the Friends of Belle Isle, and was one of the founders of the East Outer Drive Community Organization.
